American author Zane Grey is best remembered for his American “wild west” tales published as periodical series and books. His 1910 novel “Heritage of the Desert” attracted much attention and his 1912 novel “Riders of the Purple Sage” established him as a wildly popular writer. Zane’s successful writing career allowed him to emerge as one of the first millionaire authors.  But the young Grey was a talented baseball player. The University of Pennsylvania awarded him a baseball scholarship. After graduating, he even played minor league baseball for a time.  Overall, though, Grey was most passionate about writing and drew upon his travels in the American west and his baseball experience to produce a large volume of work.  The baseball stories in this collection, originally published in various periodicals in the early 1900s, were subsequently collected and published in book form by Grosset & Dunlap in 1920.
